<dc:description>Traumatic ulcerative granuloma with stromal eosinophilia (TUGSE) is a rare, benign, self−limiting oral mucosal disease. In adults, TUGSE is thought to be caused by trauma from fractured teeth or ill−fitting dental prostheses, although its exact cause remains unknown. Its histological hallmark is diffuse infiltration of granulation of tissue and inflammatory cells with increased capillary vascularity beneath the ulcerated mucosa. The presence of eosinophils has been well−documented in previous reports. TUGSE often resembles squamous cell carcinoma and may arise from self−injury linked to psychological problems. The patient reported here was a 65−year−old female who visited our hospital with ulceration in the left upper gingival area extending to the buccal mucosa. Ulceration occurred after the extraction of her left maxillary molar 6 months before presentation ; she had visited several oral surgeons but did not receive satisfactory treatment. She had repeatedly pricked the extraction socket and its surrounding area with a needle, believing that this was the best treatment to remove ‘unhealthy blood’ from the lesion. This case of TUGSE was caused by self−injury, possibly accompanied by psychological problems. When adults encounter TUGSE, detailed medical interviews and psychological interventions may be crucial.</dc:description>
