内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Language barriers remain a major obstacle to equitable healthcare, particularly in multilingual and multicultural societies. AI-powered translation tools, including general platforms such as Google Translate and specialized medical systems, are increasingly being used to address these gaps. This paper examines their potential and limitations, with a focus on the Japanese context. Evidence indicates that these technologies offer clear benefits: rapid and scalable communication, improved access in rural or resource-limited settings, and enhanced efficiency through integration with electronic health records and telemedicine. Patients report greater empowerment, and institutions may reduce reliance on costly interpreter services. However, challenges persist. Current systems often misinterpret complex, technical, or culturally nuanced conversations, raising risks for patient safety. Ethical concerns regarding privacy, accountability, and trust also remain. A hybrid model combining AI tools with human interpreters offers the most effective path forward, positioning AI translation as a complement rather than a replacement in clinical practice.
