The Ulex europeus agglutinin I was used as a marker of blood group substance H in the immunoperoxidase method. Formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissues were employed. The cell membranes of the spinous layer stained positively in normal oral mucosa, whereas the basal cells reacted negatively. Both the spinous cells and basal cells in the dysplastic epithelium in a oral premalignant lesion showed a positive reaction. Blood group substance H was present in all of the squamous cell carcinomas. The staining intensity in cancerous lesions showed a considerable variation.
