This cycle is correlated with the nocturnal eating habits of rats. Food intake at night stimulates the output of amylase from parotid acini which is accompanied by the synthesis and reaccumulation of amylase in parotid acini in the daytime. Therefore, we can describe the amylase secretion in rat parotid glands as a diurnal process.
