The results were as follows : 1. 49.33%(boys: 44.14%, girls: 54.27%) of the A elementary school children and 53.67% of the B elementary school children complained of one or more symptoms. Approximately eighty per cent of the 4th grade children (9yrs.) were aware of the symptoms. The A elementary school girls reported more symptoms than boys (P<0.05). 2. The frequencies of complaints of temporomandibular joint sounds were above 10%. At the B elementary school, the 4th (9yrs.) and 6th grade (11yrs.) children reported more symptoms than other grades. 3. Approximately 10% of the children were aware of pain on palpation of masticatory muscles. The 4th grade children (9yrs.) reported the most complaints (22%) of all grades. 4. It was surmised that approximately five per cent of the children lack smooth movement of the mandible. 5. Approximately three per cent of the A elementary school children and five per cent of the B elementary school children complained of pain on palpation of the temporomandibular joint. The 4th grade children (9yrs.) of the B elementary school reported the most of this. 6. Approximately 30% of the children had symptoms related to temporomandibular joint disorders (headache in the temple region/stiffened shoulder muscles), 60% of the 4th grade children (9yrs.) complained of headache in the temple region. More than half of the 4th (9yrs.) and 5th grade (10yrs.) children of the B elementary school complained of stiff shoulder muscles.
