The parotid amylase activity was markedly lower in rats fed a liquid diet than in rats fed a powdered or control diet for 2 weeks. The parotid amylase activity in rats fed the powdered diet was not different from in the rats fed the pelleted diet. The pancreatic amylase activity was slightly but statistically significantly lower with the liquid diet than with the pelleted diet. These results suggest that in adult rats the stimuli by the contact of the dry diet to the oral mucosa are more important for the maintenance of parotid amylase activity than those induced by mastication of dry diet. The intra-oral sensation induced by feeding the pelleted diet appears to be necessary for the maintenance of pancreatic amylase activity.}, pages = {1--6}, title = {Effects of dietary consistency and water content on the amylase activity in parotid glands and pancreas of adult rats}, volume = {18}, year = {1999} }
